Summary
Dr. Julie Dopheide, PharmD, BCPP, FASHP will conduct a 1 hour knowledge-based continuing education webinar program on Autism Spectrum Disorder. According to the Centers for Disease Control in 2018, the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder is estimated at 1-2%, a dramatic increase over the past decade. The increase in prevalence is likely due to the wide range of clinical presentations and severity of symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Clinical variability and an array of co-occurring conditions ranging from ADHD, to OCD, to epilepsy, present pharmacotherapeutic challenges. This program will provide practical, evidence-based recommendations for the use of psychotropic medications in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Given a specific case of a child or adolescent with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), determine when an antipsychotic is warranted and recommend monitoring parameters to ensure safety.
2. Compare ADHD treatments with regard to safety, efficacy, and dosing recommendations for children with ASD.
3. Provide recommendations on the safe and effective use of antidepressants for youth with ASD.
4. Counsel a parent or family member on realistic expectations from psychotropics and complementary treatments for autism spectrum disorder.
Accreditation:
