Summary
1 in 26 Americans is impacted by epilepsy during their lifetime, with many cases beginning in childhood or adolescence. Despite being one of the most common conditions treated by pediatric neurologists, epilepsy remains a complex disorder that is poorly understood. Even with the approval of over a dozen new drugs and dosage forms for the treatment of seizures in the last 10 years, nearly one-third of children with epilepsy do not attain the goal of seizure freedom.
One area in which the science of epilepsy care continues to advance is the optimization of antiepileptic drug therapies based on diagnostics and patient-specific factors, including genomic data. With this growing knowledge, pharmacists can have a key impact on the selection, monitoring, and optimization of pharmacotherapy for children with epilepsy.
Dr. Justin Cole, PharmD, BCPS will conduct a 1-hour knowledge based continuing education webinar based program. The session will focus on increasing pediatric pharmacists’ knowledge of and confidence in the clinical use of recently-approved drugs for the treatment of seizures in children, rational treatment selection and optimization based on diagnostic and genomic data, and strategies to decrease the risk of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).
