How FDA's Draft GFI on Animal Compounding Will Affect Your Compounding Business

Published by Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding
and Spectrum Pharmacy Products

Once again, without statutory authority, FDA has released a draft guidance for industry on animal drug compounding. We believe the GFI greatly exceeds the agency's regulatory authority, and if finalized in its current form, would severely limit animal drug compounding from bulk ingredients and interfere with the state-regulated practice of veterinary medicine.

Learning Objectives for Pharmacists and Technicians:
1. Brief you on the substance of the proposal.
2. Discuss how it will restrict the compounded medications veterinarians can have on hand, in their office, for immediate treatment.
3. Explain its likely impact on the ability of veterinarians to determine what medication is best to treat animals.
4. Discuss the impact of the GFI on state boards of pharmacy and the traditional state-level regulation of pharmacy compounding.

Accreditation Information:
This lesson is a knowledge-based CE activity and is targeted to pharmacists and technicians.
